Little pieces of Dunkirk
3094

These pictures are the very best of Dunkirk back when we were kids, but we don't have many. They are so much fun to look at and remember all the fun times. If you have any pictures at all, we would love to get a copy so everyone can enjoy them!

The "Tallest One Piece Wooden Flagpole in the World"...I remembering hearing about how it was brought in on 3
flatbed railroad cars. Dunkirk was so proud of that flagpole once!

I remember when they cut it up...Boy Scouts were trying to cut up small pieces to sell to Dunkirk residents
and tourists as a fund raiser...Gary Granata 1970

I remember when they finally cut her down, as she was all rotted...and they put up a new aluminum pole in her place...
but they left the old plaque "tallest one piece wooden flagpole"
Hey!!...who you guys trying to fool???...

The store across from #3 school was owned by Angie Garagelli...although I hadn't thought of her in years. Two candies I really remember well from her store were root beer barrels and peppermint pillows. I also remember cracking Bonomo's turkish taffy...

I remember Bennett Road being a lovely tree-shaded lane. I grew up on Bennett Road. I remember when I was little, I'd lie on my back on the hard benches on the school bus and look up through the windows at the trees above....it was like heaven!

I always thought it was wonderful when I got to go shopping with my Mom to the Safe Store...and of course I was immediatly drawn to those pneumatic tubes that carried the money to the office and sent back your change and reciept...half the fun was sticking your arms and hands into the tubes to feel the suction...sometimes an article of clothing got sucked into the tubes...and on occasion I almost got sucked into those tubes too...but managed to narrowly escape at the last possible second...I often wonder if thats not why my Mom took with there all the time...secretly hoping I'd get pulled into that tube...and out of her hair forever!
